Asia-Pacific and the Middle East aviation industry is experiencing green shoots of recovery, according to the first edition of the Airport Industry Outlook, a quarterly report by Airports Council International Asia-Pacific (ACI APAC). On 16 May 2022, Airports Council International World (ACI World), Airports Council International Asia-Pacific (ACI Asia-Pacific) and the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to conduct research and studies and jointly develop and deliver training programmes for aviation professionals. The training programmes will equip aviation professionals with new knowledge and skills to help them rebuild their respective aviation sectors which have been badly hit by the COVID-19 pandemic in the last two years.
Dubai International (DXB) has recorded the busiest quarter since 2020 with 13.6m passengers in Q1 2022, indicating that traffic recovery is gaining momentum at the world’s busiest international hub. This is the second consecutive quarter when passenger traffic at DXB has surpassed the 10-million mark.
The Sharjah Airport’s strategy was successful in gaining the trust of travelers, and attracting new airline and cargo companies. Over three million passengers travelled in the first quarter of 2022 through Sharjah Airport, witnessing an increase of 119.2% as compared to 1.3 million passengers in the same period last year. The aircraft movement for the same term also marked an increase in the number of flights by 89% with 21,336 flights, compared to 11,279 flights last year.
Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific had the pleasure of being invited to speak with a group of undergraduate students from the Investment and Research Society of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUIRS) on 14th April.
According to Airport International Group, Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) had welcomed 1,330,202 passengers (PAX) by the end of March 2022 - marking a 195.4% surge and 30.9% decline against 2021 and 2019 figures, respectively. Moreover, QAIA recorded 13,684 aircraft movements (ACM) - indicating a 123.4% increase and 22.9% decrease compared with 2021 and 2019 figures, respectively. QAIA also handled 13,731 tons of cargo - 33.0% higher and 39.3% lower than figures registered in 2021 and 2019, respectively.
Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) today released the traffic figures of Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) for March 2022. During the month, HKIA handled 94,000 passengers, representing a year-on-year increase of 61.3%, although passenger traffic continued to remain significantly lower than the pre-pandemic level in 2019. Meanwhile, cargo throughput and flight movements recorded during the month were 352,000 tonnes and 9,870, respectively, representing year-on-year decreases of 11.4% and 7.3%, respectively.
