2024 MIA Media New Year Gathering

Macau International Airport (MIA) hosted the 2024 Media New Year Gathering on 24th January 2024, expressing gratitude for the support from media. 2024 is a special year that has commemorated both the 75th anniversary of founding of People’s Republic of China and the 25th anniversary of Macau’s returning to motherland, during which MIA has not only embraced unprecedented opportunities, but also has faced many unusual challenges arisen from. With the all-out support from the Central and SAR Governments, along with the collaboration and the guidance from the corporate management as well as the close attention and the advice from media friends, team of MIA continues coping together with joint forces to face the challenges, and usher in a new chapter of development.

 

2023 Performance Review

Chairman of the Executive Committee of Macau International Airport Company Limited (CAM) Mr. Chan Weng Hong noted in his welcome speech that MIA welcomed 5.15 million passengers and over 42,500 aircraft movements were handled in 2023, representing 54% and 55% recovery to pre-pandemic (2019) levels, respectively. In terms of the cargo market, a steady growth was maintained with cargo volume of 63,800 tonnes was handled with a year-on-year increase of 24% in 2023. The operation of business aviation reached to 923 movements, more than double the previous year. CAM total revenue of 2023 is estimated to be MOP1.18 billion, an increase of 178% as compared with previous year, which is estimated to have resumed to 65% of pre-epidemic year 2019.

 

Airport Expansion Increase Capacity and Implementation of the Integration of Macau and Hengqin

MIA has been constantly enhancing airport security, operational management, and passenger services from various aspects, aiming to optimize the passenger experience and deliver quality services. In 2023, CAM actively initiated the preliminary preparations for the Macau International Expansion and Reclamation Project and systematically conducted various tendering processes and refining the layout of the first-phase apron. The Environmental Monitoring and Hydrologic Monitoring works have been gradually launched and the reclamation project is expected to be commenced in the second half of 2024. In November 2023, the State Council officially approved the “Overall Development Plan of the Hengqin Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone”, and coupled with the SAR Government’s policy supporting the overall development of MIA. It is evident to be favourable for the recovery and substantial growth of Macau International Airport and civil aviation industry of Macau, fully demonstrating the long term support of the Central and SAR Governments for MIA. CAM will fully cooperate with the Plan and actively facilitate the implementation of airport check-in service at Hengqin Port and jointly develop the “One Journey, Multiple Stops” interline trips between Macau and Hengqin, while strengthen cooperation with well-known mainland logistics and cross-border e-commerce to promote the cross-border logistics between two places and facilitate the integrated development of Hengqin and Macau.

 

Upgrading Software and Hardware Facilities to Promote Interconnectivity in the Bay Area

By the end of 2023, MIA has formally connected with the China National Air Traffic flow Management System, accelerating the automation coordination with Zhuhai and Hong Kong air traffic control to ensure that the air traffic control capacity meets the development needs of MIA. The Macau International Airport Check-In Centre located on the ground floor at the Macau Frontier Port of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) has been officially put into operation, promoting the interconnection of the transportation network in the Greater Bay Area. In line with the SAR Government’s E-Government development, MIA has coordinated with the Airport Checkpoint of the Border Control Department of the Macao Public Security Police Force to set up the E-boarding pass clearance service, to further enhance passenger travel efficiency.

 

Optimization Planning of Service and Facility Upgrade

In 2023, CAM acquired professional consultancy service aiming to re-planning and re-designing the airport commercial areas for the upcoming public tender procedures. Food and Beverage Services, Duty-Free Liquor & Tobacco Services, as well as Complex Retail Services public tender procedures was orderly launched by different phases throughout the year.

 

Over 60 airport facilities, equipment, and information optimization projects have been systematically carried out in 2023, including the replacement of the joint sealant on runway pavement, pavement grouting works in apron, waterproofing and drainage system projects of fire station and various buildings. The network setup and system installation for the New Integrated Airport Management Center (IAMC) and Emergency Operation Center (EOC) have been also completed and is expected to be put into service within 2024. These project enhancements comprehensively higher the efficiency of airport operational services. In additionally, replacement of flight information display hardware and deployment of airport private cloud infrastructure will be gradually carried out, actively promoting the intelligent development of the airport.

 

 

2024 Passenger and Cargo Market Forecast

Looking across the complex international security situation and global economic development, it is anticipated that in 2024, the passenger volume, flight movements will increase by more than 20%, while business aviation movements and cargo volume will rise by 40% and 9%, respectively. There will be 13 additional charter flights during the CNY holiday period, including 7 flights to Mainland China, 3 to China Taipei city, and 3 to Southeast Asia (Bangkok, Cam Ranh and Phnom Penh). In 2024, Macau International Airport will adhere to the company principle of “Safety, Efficiency, and Effectiveness” while expanding the passenger and cargo in the overseas market, continuing to focus on the needs of passengers. While expanding the international passenger and cargo market, MIA will continue to focus on the needs of passengers, promote the modernization of airport infrastructure and the application of innovative technologies, comprehensively improve service quality so as to provide a safe, efficient, and convenient travel experience for passengers.
