ACI Asia-Pacific Presents Security Challenges at Regional Aviation Security Forum

The 7th Europe-Asia Pacific Aviation Security Forum, jointly hosted by the Ministry of Transport of Singapore and European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC), was held in Singapore from 29-30 November 2022.
 
Being the first in-person gathering since COVID-19, the Forum was attended by over 80 representatives from States, airports, airlines, security service providers and international associations. A number of latest developments and challenges in the area of aviation security were discussed over two days.
 
Mr. Gary Leung, Manager, Security and Facilitation, ACI Asia-Pacific, was invited to speak at one of the panels and share his insights on security challenges faced by airports in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East regions. One of the major challenges highlighted was the shortage of security screeners to cope with the foreseeable increase in demand for air travel. 
 
The lack of manpower could have significant impacts on airports, affecting not only security standards, but also the passenger experience. The panel discussed potential solutions and experiences, including enhanced recruitment and retention of personnel, wider adoption of automated technology, and professionalisation of airport security functions.
 
Apart from the manpower issue, other security challenges discussed at the Forum included the rapid evolution of global security threats, such as the rising number of cyber and drone attacks against airports in recent years as well as capacity building for less-developed airports to help them meet global security standards. 
 
The next Forum will be held in 2024 while the date and location are still to be determined.
