  • 2023-06-14

Sustainability and its implications on human resources were the central topic of discussion at the recent ACI Asia-Pacific Regional Human Resources Committee meeting in Kobe, Japan. During the two-day meeting, the committee discussed how sustainability can be integrated into human resources policies and practices, as well as various workforce-related challenges commonly faced by airports after the pandemic.

Mr. Shintaro Kitano, a business leader for Mercer, Japan's Retirement practice, delivered a keynote address and presentation on Sustainability as a Corporate Agenda and its implications. Mr. Kitano also led the discussion on topics such as Building a Sustainable HR model, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), and the Future of Work.

The committee also invited Ms. Masako Taguchi, Vice President of Human Resources at Universal Studios Japan as a guest speaker, sharing insight into sustainability practices from a theme park perspective. The committee acknowledged similarities in both industries in managing a diverse workforce and stakeholders.

The Committee Members also discussed and shared best practices in employee engagement, sustainability reporting, DEI, corporate succession practices, and how the "S" in ESG has heightened the importance of sustainability.

Human Resources has been at the forefront when it comes to policies, business continuity, and employee safety and productivity, and have played a significant role in guiding organisation through the pandemic. Looking forward, HR is becoming more important for leading and/or coordinating environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) goals in their organisations. Hosted by Kansai Airports, the meeting was attended by over 35 HR leaders from airports in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East.
