Airport Authority Welcomes Support from Policy Address on Strengthening International Aviation Hub

  • 2024-10-16

Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) welcomes the Chief Executive’s 2024 Policy Address, in which he supports Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) in stepping up efforts to expand aviation network and develop new destinations and flights, consolidating its position as an international aviation hub, as well as supporting various new projects under the Airport City strategy.

AAHK has been dedicated to the implementation of various projects under the Airport City strategy in recent years. The scale of Airport City will be expanded further by more than double. New projects include an ecosystem for the arts industry, a yacht bay with ancillary facilities, a food market for imported fresh food, and more. These new projects will complement 11SKIES, which will commission in phases from the second quarter of next year, and AsiaWorld‑Expo Phase 2, promoting high‑end commercial, tourist and leisure activities, and establishing Airport City as a new landmark in the region.

AAHK also welcomes the government’s support on combining the strengths of Hong Kong and Zhuhai’s airports in enhancing the Fly-Via-Zhuhai-HK direct passenger service, as well as cooperating with Zhuhai in promoting international air cargo business for mutual benefits.

HKIA is the world’s busiest cargo airport. To leverage HKIA’s position as the leading international cargo gateway of the Greater Bay Area, AAHK established the world's first sea‑air intermodal cargo‑transhipment facility, “HKIA Dongguan Logistics Park” in Dongguan. The initial stage of first‑phase construction for the permanent logistics park will be completed by the end of next year. Advance planning will be made to commence the second phase development, introducing more high value added logistics, cross-boundary e-commerce and courier service facilities.

Vivian Cheung, Acting Chief Executive Officer of AAHK, said, “We sincerely thank and support the Chief Executive for the various measures in his Policy Address, especially the support for HKIA to step up efforts in expanding aviation network and developing new destinations and flights, as well as the relaxation of visa policy to foster travel and business exchanges with countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. We will further promote the Airport City strategy, expand the Airport City’s scale, and continue with the development of the HKIA Dongguan Logistics Park. We will also continue to work hand in hand with the relevant government bureaus and departments, and the airport community in offering more convenient services for our passengers, so as to further consolidate HKIA’s role as a global aviation hub, and contribute to Hong Kong and the region’s economic development.”
