Kannur International Airport Prepares for Maiden Air Cargo Freighter Operations

Kannur International Airport (KIAL), India is all set to mark a significant milestone in its aviation journey as it prepares to commence its first-ever Air Cargo Freighter Operations on the 17th of August, 2023. The much-anticipated freighter operations will be undertaken by Dravidan Aviation Services Pvt Ltd, ushering in a new era of cargo transportation and trade opportunities for the region.

Dravidan Aviation Services Pvt Ltd has charted an ambitious course, with plans to operate a total of 8 flights this August. These initial flights are expected to be a prelude to their grand vision of operating bi-weekly flights to Gulf sectors starting from September, further enhancing trade connections and cargo movements between Kannur and the Gulf regions.

The freighter operations will be carried out utilizing the reliable and efficient B737-700 aircraft, ensuring seamless connectivity and efficient transportation of goods. Among the diverse range of perishable items destined for transportation are flowers, fruits, vegetables, and even banana leaves - a vibrant representation of the region's rich agricultural output.

Yet, the significance of this endeavor extends beyond the realm of cargo logistics. It holds the potential to act as a catalyst for the local handloom sector, breathing new life into Kannur's time-honored tradition of weaving. In a similar vein, the airport's strategic location is poised to play a pivotal role in facilitating the export of perishable goods from the lush landscapes of Madikeri, thus opening up new avenues for farmers and producers in the region.
Adding to the excitement, the airport is gearing up for the inauguration of its new Integrated Cargo Terminal in November 2023. This state-of-the-art facility is expected to have a massive capacity of 60,000 metric tons, making it a crucial hub for cargo operations and further solidifying Kannur's position in the cargo transportation landscape.

Mr. Dinesh Kumar, Managing Director of Kannur International Airport, expressed his visionary aspirations for the airport. He emphasized the potential for Kannur to become a perishable cargo hub with the upcoming cargo terminal, facilitating the efficient and swift movement of perishable goods. He also highlighted the positive trajectory of the airport, pointing out the expected increase in flights during the winter schedule, which is anticipated to contribute to a robust and thriving aviation ecosystem.
