Korea Airports Corporation, World’s First to Introduce openBIM Based Airport Facility Information Integrated Management System
- 16 Nov 2020
Korea Airports Corporation(KAC) introduced for the first time the ‘KAC-BIM’, an Airport facility information integrated management system based on openBIM (Building Information Modelling), during the 2020 building SMART International Summit held virtually from October 26 to November 6.
This year, 25 countries including G20 member states participated in the Summit. KAC was invited to give presentation on the Smart Airport System and openBIM based digital twin technological prowess, which gathered attention from various industries.
KAC-BIM technology is the first in the world to attempt integrated openBIM and digital twin management of information on airport facility, construction and maintenance. It enables intelligent control and automation that hyper-connects people, objects and 3D information modelling technology. KAC-BIM is expected to create high economic added-value through improved productivity by saving time and cost (caused by disconnected BIM models).
In line with the Korean government’s policy on digitalization of SOC(Social Overhead Capital), KAC will leverage openBIM system to establish digital infrastructure and activate big data for airport operation, management and construction in Korea.
KAC-BIM system is also world’s first in airport sector to qualify for BIM information management standard set by the International Organization for Standardization(ISO) under ISO19650. Consequently, the system will be a great contribution to global airport industry once implemented to airport construction, operation and management both at home and abroad.
“KAC-BIM will be the integral part in Airport business, contributing significantly to the successful establishment of Smart Airport System as well as the preventive emergency response system needed to prevent and process natural disasters and terrorism. KAC will continue to develop on the system so as to commercialize systemized digital standard and guideline for the airport industry.”, said CEO of KAC, Mr. Chang-Wan Son.
*BIM (Building Information Modeling) is a technology that enables 3D visualization and automation in overall construction process to enhance quality and productivity. These includes optimized design and automated change of material quantity as a result of design change.
*openBIM is an International standard on BIM data connectivity secured by information exchange between different BIM models
*Digital Twin is a virtual replica, which is a software representation used for real-life situation simulation on the computer to predict and analyze physical asset information results.
