Taoyuan International Airport Terminal 3 Construction Peak Unfolded by the Installation of the first Mega Column

On 2 August 2023, TIAC (Taoyuan International Airport Company) Chairman Wei-Fuu Yang and CEO Hsiao-Lun Fan went to T3 construction site to inspect the hoisting and installation of the first mega column that supports T3 roof. The installation of the mega column symbolized the new milestone of T3 construction, which, after completion in 2026, will increase Taoyuan Airport’s annual service capacity to 82 million. 
 
T3 main building has 3 underground levels and 4 floors, and its Roof is 414 meters long and 242 meters wide. Its total floor area reaches 580,000 square meters. The main feature of T3 is its wave-like roof and the flowery indoor ceiling decoration. 16 mega columns, each of which weighs 200 tons and is 19 meters high, and their collateral truss, are planned to support and stabilize the roof. The column installation therefore is the most challenging work of T3 construction. The construction team especially made 1:1 scale models of key structures such as the column, roof decorations, and curtain to calculate and test in advance the installation measures and SOP. 

Chairman Yang said that the installation of the mega column, a milestone, means that the outline of T3 main building, occupying 210,000 square meters, is getting into shape. Until 31 July 2023, the T3 engineering construction team, of Samsung and RSEA engineering, has completed 19.67% of this project, 0.32% ahead of schedule: the steel structure of B2 to 3F level had completed, and the architecture shape of north concourse is emerging. The construction team is making the reinforced concrete work of T3 1st to 3rd floor. It is estimated that in 2024, T3 north concourse will be connected with T2 to serve passengers.   
    
Taoyuan Airport’s 2023 H1 passenger traffic, on average 83,000 daily, reached 15,167,319, about 62% of 2019 H1 number, 24,324,450. Taoyuan Airport’s overall service capacity after T3 completion will reach 82 million－45 million of T3 plus 37 million of T1 and T2－, enough to give passengers a convenient and comfortable airport experience, a target all the airport stakeholders work hard to achieve.
